Hey everyone! I think we are FINALLY to the point of publicizing our upcoming weekly league here on our Springfield municipal disc golf course, and flyers are being posted at the first tee to publicize the league on Monday, May 12. It will be free to play, and open to players of all skill levels and experience. We will tee off from Hole 1 at 6:30pm (sharp!) every Tuesday evening, beginning June 3. League action will be scheduled to last through Tuesday, September 30, with some type of "end of year" tournament to wrap things up for the season. I am also working to organize a "disc golf marathon" fund-raising event for late Summer or early Fall, though the details of that event are still being worked out.

For more information, you may also review the attached flyer. And of course, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at datonn@mapformation.com or by phone at 507-227-3338. Thanks!

Derek

We officially opened our Springfield Disc Golf league on Tuesday, June 3. Had a light turn-out (three players), but with the threat of rain and a lot of wet grass, that's okay. I know we'll have more in the weeks to come!

Bob Borer grabbed the early lead in our league action with a -2 (34). Derek Tonn had a -1 (35), and Tony Nelson had a +1 (37). Pretty good shooting out there, though we all left 2-3 shots out on the course that we should have had. Thanks to Bob and Tony for coming out tonight...and I promise we'll have 2-3 more players join us in the weeks ahead! :)

All four of us who showed up at league tonight had off-nights, but Bob Borer still managed to turn in a -1 (35) in the round that counted. Linn Morse carded the round of the night in our second round...shooting a -4 (32). We also ran into four guys from Redwood Falls out playing the Springfield course while we were out there...and they seemed to be interested in participating in our league as well. We hope that they'll show up next Tuesday night and show the rest of us guys how it's done. :-) It'd be nice to go from four to eight players...as well as recruit a few more players from Springfield as well.

Picked up two more players this week...and we all got to watch Linn Morse tear it up for a -5 (31). Pretty good shots out there from everyone this week. We all had a hole or two that we'd just as soon forget, but it was a good night overall. Every week we're picking up another player or two, it seems...which is awesome. Now if we could just get more players from Springfield to come out and join us....since I'm the only player from the 56087 so far... :-)

I think it is safe to say that all five of us who showed up for league this Tuesday had a forgettable evening. :-) No rounds under par for any of us (four of us also played a second round besides). Linn and I had weekly honors with an even par (36) round on the first round...and Linn was the only player to finish at/under par for the week (72 after 24 holes, one shot ahead of my 73). Tony had an unbelievably good tee shot on Hole 9 (about two feet from the pole off the tee for a drop-in deuce), and Claire had some great approaches and putts too! All told though, none of us was on our A-game tonight...so we'll all have a bit more to prove next Tuesday.

All four of us who were out there tonight were dragging our heels a little bit as we were tired from doing lots of other stuff over the previous days. However, I managed to squeak-out an under par 35 (-1) on a windy evening to lead the group this week. The story of the week though was Claire Nelson. She's getting good...VERY good with her play, and actually gave all four of us all we could handle this week with three deuces on the back half of the course to finish at +3 (39). I've told her that she should really consider playing in a few MFA/SMDGA events...as I think she could hold her own with lots of solid drives and approach shots. Not sure if she'll give it a go or not, but if she keeps going the way she's going, she'll be shooting under par on our course on a semi-regular basis by the end of the year. Way to go, Claire!

It was the tail of two rounds tonight in Springfield. In the first round (the round that counted), we had a strong wind from the North to contend with...although Tony, Linn and I all managed to put a -2 (34) on the card. For the second round, Conrad had to take off and Keyes Nelson (Tony and Claire's son) played instead of just caddying and held his own with five pars. The wind died down completely, and we could really attack the holes. We all missed putts in Round Two that we would like to have back, but I have to say that Round Two was a blast! PERFECT disc golf conditions...75-76 degrees, no wind, sun almost setting and the moon above us in the sky, etc. The stuff that postcards are made of. :-P

It was a HOT night in Springfield with little/no wind. I thought the scores would be a bit lower due to the heat and humidity (always seem to play better in that hot, sticky weather), but it ended up being a fairly average night for us. I lead the pack with a -3 (33), with Linn and Tony hot on my trail. Claire had an off-night tonight, but with how hot it was out there, I think we all get a bit of a "pass" this week. Linn and I toughed it out for a second round, each crawling back to par (36) with deuces on Hole 12. Hopefully next week though, it won't be so hot...

Bob and Linn lead the way tonight, both with a -2 (34). Bob also had the hot round in our second (exhibition) round as well, shooting a nice -4 (32). Just the four of us made it tonight...though we did run into two people from Springfield who were making their way around the course while we were playing. We gave them the info for the smdga.com web site, as well as invited them to join us for next week's league action. We'll see if they make it in the weeks to come. The more the merrier!

No comment. :-)

Okay, okay, a FEW comments. Our first round tonight though was BAD....our second worst cumulative average round since we started our league, in fact! It was pretty ugly all-around, though Linn and I managed to squeak in at -1 (35) to save a little face.

Bob had the round of the night though...shooting seven deuces and a bogey in Round Two for a phat -6 (30)...the third lowest score ever shot on our course! Congratulations to Bob on a terrific round. We all got better from Round One to Round Two...but Round One was pretty ugly. Oh well! We still had fun, got a little exercise and nobody lost any discs...so it's tough to complain about that. :-)

A better showing tonight...with four rounds at or below par. Tony had the shot of the year tonight though on Hole 3...a miracle deuce from 50 feet or so up the hill through a ton of trees. Tony was DEEP in the rough and let 'er rip. All I heard was chains and then the roar/cheer that went up after we saw the disc was in the basket.

We also picked up two more players this week. Welcome aboard, Ryan Breisch and Abbey Wolfson! We are thrilled to have you joining us on Tuesday evenings.

Ten weeks into our league, we've had 47 rounds that count between us...with an average cumulative score of 37.73 (+1.73 over par). Our top-four league members set to represent us in the SMDGA Cup, as of 8/5, are:

1. Linn Morse - 34.88 average
2. Derek Tonn - 35.00 average
3. Bob Borer - 35.75 average
4. Tony Nelson - 38.30 average

** - a minimum of five rounds will be required in order to quality for the SMDGA Cup team, representing Springfield.

We've got six more weeks though for those rankings to change...and Ryan's opening round of 36 has him right on our heels for one of those spots. We'll see how it all plays out...

We had another incredibly beautiful Tuesday evening to play disc golf this week, and our group (and posses, LOL) were growing! Bob and I duked it out for low score honors in the round that counted...then we posted four at/under par rounds as a group in Round Two to polish off the evening. We also had Abbey Wolfson play with us for the first time tonight, and she made two awesome putts and a few other great shots to keep the rest of us honest! What a beautiful night for disc golf! I wish they all could be like that one... :-)

Tonight was one of those "game of inches" types of nights where our whole group left 2-3 shots each out on the course by rattling off some chains here, hitting the bottom of the basket there, etc. All of us are probably thinking "woulda coulda shoulda"...but even still, we managed to shoot JUST over par as a group (36.67) as a group of six players. Bob (34) and I (31) duked it out again tonight for weekly low score...and our current standings for our September 20 SMDGA Cup team are now as follows:

1. Derek Tonn (34.42)
2. Linn Morse (35.30)
3. Bob Borer (35.40)
4. Tony Nelson (38.17)
---------------------------
5. Ryan Breisch (38.33**)
6. Conrad Tellingshauser (40.33**)
7. Claire Nelson (42.67)

** - currently ineligible for SMDGA Cup team, until they have played a minimum of five rounds.

We're probably going to have to move our start time up to 6:15pm or even 6:00pm, as Tony, Claire and I had to feel our way through Holes 9-12 in Round Two. It was another beautiful night for disc golf though....a bit humid, but otherwise perfect.
