Hey everyone! I think we are FINALLY to the point of publicizing our upcoming weekly league here on our Springfield municipal disc golf course, and flyers are being posted at the first tee to publicize the league on Monday, May 12. It will be free to play, and open to players of all skill levels and experience. We will tee off from Hole 1 at 6:30pm (sharp!) every Tuesday evening, beginning June 3. League action will be scheduled to last through Tuesday, September 30, with some type of "end of year" tournament to wrap things up for the season. I am also working to organize a "disc golf marathon" fund-raising event for late Summer or early Fall, though the details of that event are still being worked out.

For more information, you may also review the attached flyer. And of course, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at datonn@mapformation.com or by phone at 507-227-3338. Thanks!

Derek

Thanks a lot for reporting those scores tonight, Tony! I missed playing with you guys tonight...but a good time was had by all at Libby's kindergarten orientation. :-)

Wow....Claire beat Linn. Way to go, Claire! A 42 out of Linn though...he must have had a frustrating night. I hope nobody lost any discs. And Bob? I expect nothing less than -2 or -3 out of Bob. He's rock-solid.

I took all those scores and updated our Google Docs spreadsheet, and our current standings for our SMDGA Cup roster with three more weeks to go looks like this:

1. Derek Tonn (34.42)
2. Bob Borer (35.18)
3. Linn Morse (35.91)
4. Tony Nelson (37.92)
----------------------------------
5. Ryan Breisch (37.50)**
6. Conrad Tellingshauser (40.33)
7. Claire Nelson (42.50)
8. Abbey Wolfson (48.00)

** - one round short of eligibility.

It looks like Bob, Linn and I will be battling it out for bragging rights and seedings, with Tony and Ryan in a neck-and-neck battle for that fourth roster spot for the SMDGA Cup. Should be a fun final three weeks before the Cup...with September 23 and 30 being all-about our competition for Lowest Score and Most-Improved Player. :-) Then we just have to figure out what to do after September 30. It's been too much fun to simply call it a season! However, with it getting darker earlier, we might have to do a Fall league on Saturday or Sunday...if folks are interested. (?)

Tough night out there again tonight with an average collective score between us of 37.67 (nearly two over par). The wind was up and took turns giving us fits off the tee and in our approaches. Bob and I managed to each sneak in at -2 (34) for the round..but it wasn't pretty getting there. Tony had some of the toughest luck of the year tonight too. He bought a brand-new disc over the weekend, and in warm-ups before our first round, it turned over on him on Hole 1...right into the river. Then during our first round, he had his favorite XL turn over on him and it kept going...and going...and GOING until it splashed-down in Salonek's Pond. $30 in nice discs gone in the span of about an hour. Ugh. Linn had one go in the water on 10...the same spot where I put one in earlier in the afternoon while practicing a couple of shots. All in all, a tough day out in the wind.

We had another gorgeous (and I mean GORGEOUS!) night for disc golf here in Springfield tonight, and the scores really showed it! Ryan (34), Bob (31) and I (30) all shot our best scores in league so far this year...and we all got to talk about how Gabe's (New Ulm) smack-talk leading into the SMDGA Cup on September 20 in Mankato makes us feel a little "extra motivation"...lol. :-)

Speaking of which, after tonight's results, our current standings for the SMDGA Cup roster are as follows:

1. Derek Tonn (34.07)
2. Bob Borer (34.77)
3. Linn Morse (36.15)
4. Ryan Breisch (37.17)
----------------------------------
5. Tony Nelson (38.27)
6. Conrad Tellingshauser (40.33)
7. Claire Nelson (42.25)
8. Abbey Wolfson (48.00)

It sounds as though Ryan might not be able to make it to Mankato on the 20th...which would give Tony that fourth slot. Tony might still catch/pass Ryan for the fourth slot next week too! However, as of today, that is how things are shaking out.

Bob's putting up one HECK of a fight for that #1 seed! He made me finish 3 2 2 2 2 2 on the last six holes tonight just to beat him by one. He's really helping me to elevate my play on "game day," though I still left 2-3 shots out there on holes 2, 4 and 5 tonight that I should have had. A BEAUTIFUL evening for disc golf though, regardless. One of the best.

Another GORGEOUS night here in Springfield tonight. We were a smaller group without Bob, Claire, Conrad and Abbey, but we still had a good time. Tony was on fire with his putting tonight...tying his season-low with a two under 34. I also had a nice string of putts to finish at 31...just in time for Mankato on Saturday. Speaking of Mankato, our final standings for determining our four players at the SMDGA Cup are as follows:

1. Derek Tonn (33.87)
2. Bob Borer (34.77)
3. Linn Morse (36.00)

4. Ryan Breisch (37.14)
----------------------------------
5. Tony Nelson (38.00)
6. Conrad Tellingshauser (40.33)
7. Claire Nelson (42.25)
8. Abbey Wolfson (48.00)

Ryan has to move into a new house on Saturday, so Tony will be taking his spot as our #4 seed. We'll do our darnedest to represent our league well in Mankato...hopefully showing a few of those other teams that we will NOT be ignored. :-P

[Kevin Garnett]We're comin' Mankato....we're comin'[/Kevin Garnett] LOL.

I was worried this afternoon when it was raining that we might have our first wash-out of our league. However, the skies cleared and we had another gorgeous night for disc golf tonight. Bob lead the way with a -4 (32) tonight, with me (33), Tony (36) and Claire (40) holding our own. Claire had TWO ace-runs on Holes 10 and 12 tonight too! We all thought either of those shots could find their way into the chains, but both JUST missed. Another fun night here in Springfield.

One more week of league to go! As of tonight, our standings for the three awards to be handed out in league are as follows:

1. Overall average score. It'll come down to me (33.81) vs. Bob (34.57) for all the marbles. Bob will need to beat me by probably around 6-7 shots next week, but with how good he is, it is most-certainly possible.

2. Most Improved. Claire is looking like she'll take this award, shaving off an impressive 3.13 shots/round since we started league. Me (2.89) and Bob (2.53) also have a shot at it too, though it would take a LOT for either of us to overcome that huge deficit.

3. Ace Pool. Nobody has aced in league as of yet...so that choice of plastic has not yet been claimed. We might need to do a little CTP action after our scoring round next Tuesday to settle that prize...if nobody aces next week, of course.

What a beautiful night to wrap-up our 2008 league tonight! No wind, mid-60s and the sun slowly setting in the West while we wrapped up Holes 10, 11 and 12. Linn had the hot-hand tonight with a -4 (32), with me (33) and Bob (34) right on his tail. Tony (36) and Claire (39) played well too...so it was a good round to wrap things up for the year.

In our battle (and it was a HEATED battle) for lowest average score over the 18-week league, here are your final standings:

1. Derek Tonn (33.76)
2. Bob Borer (34.53)
3. Linn Morse (35.87)
4. Ryan Breisch (37.14)
5. Tony Nelson (37.78)
6. Conrad Tellingshauser (40.33)
7. Claire Nelson (41.86)
8. Abbey Wolfson (48.00)

In our battle for most improved (after our first five rounds in league), Claire Nelson was the big winner...shaving a full 3.33 shots/round off where she started in June. Great job Claire!

Nobody shot an ace during league this year, so we decided to settle things by playing a closest to the pin hole on #12 after our last round was finished. I hit metal on my tee shot, and ended up sitting around ten feet from the basket to win the CTP. Discs were awarded for all three competitions, so Claire and I have a little bit of new plastic to play with now.

Not sure how many folks in league will read this, as not all of them have easy access to a computer. However, I have to say how much I thoroughly enjoyed playing with Linn, Tony, Bob, Claire, Ryan, Conrad and Abbey this Summer. Between aggressive course maintenance and a heavy workload in my day job, I didn't get to play even half as much disc golf this Summer as I have in previous years! However, Tuesday nights were some of the highlights of my Summer...and I look forward to playing with all seven of you again in the months and years ahead. If we ever get a course built in Redwood Falls, I assume we might lose 1-2 folks in league. However, that just means that Ryan, Abbey, Tony, Claire and I have to try even HARDER to get more locals to come out and join us next year.

We had a blast this year...and it didn't matter whether folks were shooting 32 or 42 either. Just getting to know one another better and sharing our love for the sport of disc golf was what made the league tick. I am so-very grateful that folks took the time out of their busy lives to come join me out on the course on Tuesday evenings this Summer! Thanks again to you all...as well as to Mac, Paul, Marlys, Doug and the rest of the City's grounds crew for helping us make improvements to the course and keep things in tip-top shape. I'll hope to see you next year!
